The “Philosopher Ruler” is a model stage that draws on Plato’s “Analogy of the Cave”. The location of the proscenium and the other implied walls of the space are ambiguous. The back of the set is rotated into the space of the sculpture and away from the viewer so that in order for the viewer to understand the perspective, his/her line of sight must also move away from the center. The offsetting of the room exposes an access point on the left side that reveals figures behind the screen who watch the scene and its viewers through vertical apertures. The viewer on the other side of the stage is at once audience member to the scene and subject of the watchers’ scrutiny.
