The Bill Russell Legacy Project sculpture represents the whole man, honoring Mr. Russell as an athlete, coach, human rights activist, ground breaker and mentor. The sculpture is larger than life size. Ten plinths surround Russell for a total of 11 units representing Mr. Russell’s 11 championships with the Boston Celtics. Each plinth features a key word and a corresponding quotation to illuminate the myriad accomplishments spanning Mr. Russell’s career both on and off the court. The plinths embrace Kallmann, McKinnell and Knowles’ architecture and transform the basic building blocks of City Hall's Brutalist architecture into a more horizontal composition at human scale where the precast units of the building are granite platforms for individuals.
